초록

This essay purports to make more widely known the main ideas of the Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico. In the first place, it tries to show that he evaded complete oblivion through the efforts of such enthusiasts as Michelet, Joyce and others. Vico came to public attention after the standard English translation of his magnum opus, The New Science, by Thomas Goddard Bergin and Max Harold Fisch. And then, there was an international symposium commemoration the 300th anniversary of his birth in 1968. Giorgio Tagliacozzo was the key figure behind this massive conference, which came out as Giambattista Vico: An International Symposium. Then it elucidates the meaning of Vico's main ideas with regard to his use of etymology. Vico's is a philosophy of 'beginning,' and that is why in Vico etymology is so important. It exemplifies his philosophy of imagination in its essence.
