초록

In this study, I try to show how Augustine in his De Civitate Dei I-V breaks down foundations of the Roman state by explaining the three following points: the origin of the state, its expansion, and religious deceit for the purpose of social unity. According to Augustine, first of all, Rome was established on murder and evil deeds. Secondly, Rome was expanded upon vices. Augustine criticizes and concludes that Roman virtues like the love of glory (gloriae cupiditas) and the desire for domination (libido dominandi) are vices because they are only excessive self-love that is essential to the earthly city.
Finally, Rome was established on the base of religious deceit. Knowing that the stories of gods written and played out by poets during festivals were mere fiction, the Roman leaders still maintained these religious festivals because of their usefulness for social concord. Thus, Rome was constructed on religious treachery. Nevertheless, his ultimate vision is not to eliminate the state but to reconstruct it again on the Christian faith.
